In the TOPOFLAME project we study the influence of surface structure on the flame propagation over solid fuels with potential applications for fire safety in manned spaceflight and for hybrid rocket engines. The goal is to develop a model of the flame propagation rate over arbitrary surfaces (in microgravity) from the underlying processes of pyrolysis, chemical reactions, turbulent flow and radiative heat transfer.

Multiphysics CFD model development for microgravity experiments of n-alkane droplet array ignition. The experiments in the drop tower and on a TEXUS sounding rocket flight are planned to study the droplet-droplet interaction during the two-stage ignition process of spray combustion.
