Über mich
I am a researcher, programmer, and I am very interested on finding simple solutions for complex problems that can be explained to other human beings. My research, professional and open-source career has been driven by improving the tools that people use to interact with existing systems as well as an interest in discovering new patterns. As a research fellow and later during the PhD I developed the idea of improving sparse models in cancer research by introducing topological information from existing protein-protein interaction networks. The main result of my doctoral thesis shows that these models can be used to discover novel drug targets as well as improve our understanding on how the features are selected. This was implemented in a software package available under a open source license that is currently used by the Bioconductor scientific community. In my free time, I am a rock climber and I am very interested in giving my contribution to open source software.
Werdegang
Berufserfahrung von André Veríssimo
2014 - 2021
PhD Student
INESC-ID
Studied how to improve sparse generalized linear models by introducing network-based centrality regularization in cancer datasets. The methods that we developed allow for the discovery of novel genes of interest as well as an improvement on the models itself and how the features are selected.
3 Jahre, Sep. 2015 - Aug. 2018
Research Fellow
INESC-ID Lisboa
Developing of sparse models for high-dimensional multi-omics patient data and model-based outlier detection. This was implemented as part of work packages WP4.1 and WP4.2
2 Jahre und 11 Monate, Dez. 2013 - Okt. 2016
Research Fellow
IDMEC, Instituto de Engenharia Mecânica
Developed software to automate the execution of multiple BLAST queries against multiple databases as part of work package WP8 of BACHberry EU Project FP7-613793
1 Jahr, Okt. 2012 - Sep. 2013
Vice President
GASTagus
Coordinator at GASTagus responsible for the internal collaborative platforms, communication and financial management. GASTagus is a non-profit organization that manages over 130 volunteers during all-year round, preparing them for a one month volunteer project in a African country or Brasil.
1 Jahr, Dez. 2011 - Nov. 2012
Research Fellow
INESC-ID
Researcher at INESC-ID in Knowledge Discovery and Bioinformatics group. Developed a web application, where a rich set of dynamic models can be fitted to experimental time-series data with data hierarchical data management. Several dynamic and algebraic models are already implemented and run in Matlab in the back-end.
Consultant at Deloitte’s Consulting division, in Manufacturing, Consumer Business, Energy and Resources industries on the Enterprise Applications service line. Professional experience in the logistics and operations processes. Those projects, took place mostly in manufacturing and consumer business organizations, across multiple business sectors and countries, such as, Portugal and Angola.
8 Monate, Feb. 2010 - Sep. 2010
Junior Consultant
Karma Consulting
Junior consultant at Karma consulting in the public sector service line. Professional experience in logistics and information systems design working with Portugal's public sector entities as a software engineer specialized in Java development
